  Space categories and lists

It's about six months since the first MSN Spaces were created by some of the Rushworth Community House webDotWizards and no-one at that time saw the relevance of the Category module so we removed it (using Customize/Modules). Now the relevance of that module can be seen and it's an extremely useful addition to have on your space for your visitors.

To add the Category module, sign into your space and click on Customize (sic). Now click on Modules and from the list, choose to add the Category module. Click Save and you'll see when you're returned to your home page that it's placed at the top left. It's probably best left in that position so your visitors can easily access it.

You may find the category module hasn't got any entries and that's because you haven't selected a category whenever you've added an item to your blogs. You can return to past blogs to add a category and re-publish each blog. Before you do that, though, have a think about the content of your posts and see if you can use the categories already there (click on the blue arrow to view the drop-down list). If you want to talk about digital cameras, for example, then use the Add a category option to add Digitial cameras as a new category and you'll see it's added to the drop-down list for any future blogs.

Staying with the topic of digital cameras for a moment, you can write about some of the little things you discover about using your camera and publish a blog about each one as time goes by. As far as you're concerned these blogs could be reminders to yourself about how to take good photos in certain situations but you can write them up to help others. There are all sorts of topics you can talk about in this way. Another that comes to mind is some little trick you've found when using Photo Story or Movie Maker. As a general rule, if there's a snippet of information whirling around in your head and you're telling yourself to remember it - blog it!

Space lists are another handy feature to use as a reminder-helper - a list of favourite sites or a list of sites for reference. But your lists don't have to contain links to other sites - they could be a list of events that are coming up, interesting places you've visited, famous people, and so on.

When you create a new list which won't contain links to sites, simply skip the middle URL field. Note there's a limit on the number of characters you can enter in the Item field (the first field) but there's plenty of space for a lengthy description.

By all means use your space to share photos with family and friends but remember as time goes by that you can add content to inform others - and save you the trouble of remembering little tips and tricks!

  webSnippets

The MSN Developer Centre opened a couple of weeks ago. This site is where those who want to write specific applications for MSN Search, MSN Virtual Earth, and so on, can download the necessary documentation and get coding.

One of the new releases is a new activity for MSN Messenger whereby contacts can share Virtual Earth to locate a place to meet, get driving directions, or talk about places they've been. Unfortunately it won't work for Australia as yet but that isn't too far away. Another is an MSN Search plug-in for Firefox users.

Keep an eye on webDotWiz's Space for other snippets during the week.
