Windows Live LocalFormerly known as Virtual Earth, WLL is version 2 of Microsoft's online mapping service. There are many new features, some of which unfortunately aren't available for Australia as yet. When you load WLL, click on Locate Me and use the IP option (Use IP address in the pop dialogue box). Depending on who your Internet Service Provider is, you'll end up at Sydney or Melbourne or another major city. Now pan to Victoria and zoom in. Currently the zoom level is only 20 miles (have a look down at the bottom right of the screen) but the satellite imagery is better (click on aerial to change from road view). Right-clicking on a location (e.g. Rushworth) enables you to add a pushpin - add a name, a comment if you want to, and an entry is added to your scratchpad. You can add as many as ten locations to the scratchpad in this manner. Once done, you can click on Permalink to copy and paste the exact web address to return to the same screen later. Or simply click on blog it! at the top of the scratchpad to make a new entry on your MSN Space to share with others. Another new feature in Windows Live Local is obtaining and displaying driving directions. At the moment you can only do this for the U.S. - here's an example of what you get after right-clicking on the map to locate where you're starting from and another right-click to locate your destination. There are a number of U.S. cities for which you can obtain a bird's eye view of an area. The images are high-resolution taken at an oblique angle to provide more detail. A tour of some of New York's landmarks will show you how it works. A small box will popup at the top left when bird's eye views are available. Here's another example, this time of a residential area in one of Boston's suburbs. Use the images in the thumbnail grid to rotate your view (the centre thumbnail is highlighted to indicate the current view). MSN Search PreviewSearching on the Web can be a time-consuming task, particularly the process that goes like this: Click link in list of sites, Get to site and have a look, No, that's not what I want, Click the back button to return to the list of sites. The Search Preview addin removes most of the pain of these steps. After installation, your search list will contain a thumbnail image of each web page in the list of sites found by MSN Search. Hover your mouse over a thumbnail and an enlarged view of the page will popup so you can preview the contents. When you find the page that looks like containing the information you're after, click it's link as normal. Another very useful MSN Search toolbar addin is Windows Live Favorites (sic) which enables you to use your list of favourites no matter which computer you're using, whether at home, work or on the road. Here are some sites to get you started:
