Internet Explorer has tabs

Last week the MSN search toolbar was updated so that users could take advantage of tabbed browsing in Internet Explorer if they so wished.

Firstly, what is tabbed browsing? Well, you only need to run one copy of Internet Explorer and across the top of the window you can open each new site under its own tab. Thus with a single click you're able to quickly move from one site to another to check the site's contents.

The MSN search toolbar version has a feature called "My Tabs" which enables you to add sites that you want to open when you first start browsing. For example, webDotWiz has about ten or more sites he checks each day. He's added each to his "My Tabs" so with one click these sites load, each under its own tab, and webDotWiz can simply click each tab to see what's new on each site.

Note that the MSN toolbar tab feature is an add-on to Internet Explorer in the same way that some browsers built on the Internet Explorer base (e.g. Maxthon) feature tabbed browsing. Microsoft developers are currently working on Internet Explorer version 7 and tabs will be built in to this new version. It's not as easy as it looks and you can keep up to date with developments by reading the IE Blog.

While talking about the MSN search toolbar, it's worth your time to read through the Toolbar Help site so you make best use of it and check all the options you can set. As well, visit the Windows Desktop Search Addins page for free extra filters to expand the documents that are indexed on your computer. If you download lots of Acrobat PDF files, you'll certainly need the PDF filter. Another one you might want is the Zip file filter.

MSN Spaces cleverness

webDotWiz is encouraging everybody who wants an easy method to share their photos with family and friends to set up their own MSN Space (all you need is a free Hotmail account).

After you've got the MSN search toolbar installed, you'll see that there's a Spaces button. After your normal sign in to MSN Messenger, go to one of your favourite sites (such as ABC news) and choose a story. Now click on the Spaces button and, lo and behold, you're immediately able to add a new entry to your blog. Notice how the title for the new blog is filled in with the title of the news story you were reading.

Another little trick is that your Space is automatically available to all those people who have an RSS reader. RSS usually stands for Really Simple Syndication and you've probably visited sites where you see a red button labelled XML or RSS; www.webDotTrainsim.com is an example. Have a look under Settings at your Space and you'll see syndication is turned on. As well you must also have permissions set to Public.

You won't see how syndication works when you're in edit mode in your space. So click on Preview at the top right. Then you'll be looking at your space as visitors see it and you'll notice at the top a link to Syndicate using RSS - this is where friends can add an RSS feed to their RSS reader and they'll be automatically notified when you blog or add photos to your space.
