Live Maps refreshedThe big advantage offered by web services, such as Windows Live Maps, is that new features can be added and we, the users, benefit without having to download anything. So updates over the past week or so to Live Maps include more cities, in particular in the U.K. and Italy, covered by bird's eye view photography, and expansion of the drawing tools to create walking, hiking and cycling trails (distances automatically calculated and inserted). Apart from lots of new cities being viewable in bird's eye view, another update to Live Maps the other day was the replacement of the grid control using an inset map instead to look around in bird's eye view. Live Maps will tell you if a city or region has bird's eye view with a little message popping up near the navigation control and the bird's eye view icon (the bottom of the two in the nav control) will brighten. As well, the inset map will slide out. The viewable area is greyed out on this inset map and you can use it by dragging the mouse to move the vieweable area in the main map view. There's a write up, too, of the thinking behind the mini-map tool when in bird's eye view mode. Among other things, note the mouse changing from a large hand for panning to a target cursor to indicate you're near the edge of a bird's eye view - a click at this stage will load the next lot of bird's eye view images. Chat with Santa, Soapbox videosYou and the young ones might want to catch up with Santa and have a chat about what he's doing this Christmas. Simply add northpole@live.com to your Live Messenger contact list and double click to begin a conversation. Starting on the morning of Christmas Eve, the young ones will be able to ask Santa where he is on his trip around the world. If the young ones are being impatient, you can go to the Norad Santa Tracking Site to find his current location. The Rushworth Community House webDotWizards have long been users of Windows Photo Story to create movies from their photo collections. Until Soapbox on MSN Video came along it was difficult to find enough online storage and a convenient way to show them off. Because Soapbox ties in with Windows Live Spaces it's easy to add a player to a Live Space and have one or more of your own videos available for visitors to watch. So if you haven't already downloaded Photo Story, get it and start putting together some movies of your photo collection. A word of caution, though, about visiting Soapbox to watch movies - it's addictive and if you're on a limited broadband plan, you can easily exceed your monthly limit.
